This 1945 edition has been in Mr Mom's family for decades. Its well worn, with hand written adaptations in the margin. Just the kind of cookbook I love!
1 1/2 lbs Hamburg steak (this means ground beef) 1/4 lb bacon 2 large Spanish onions, chopped 2 large sweet peppers, chopped 1 can mushrooms 1 can kidney beans 2 cups cooked egg noodles, rice, or spaghetti 3 large ripe tomatoes salt and pepper
Fry steak until golden brown, then fry bacon and add to steak. Add onions and peppers, and cook for 10 minutes, then add mushrooms, beans, and noodles, rice or spaghetti, and thinly peeled tomatoes. Stir well, season and simmer for 20 minutes.
If desired, cooked ingredients may be placed in a casserole and grated cheese, bread crumbs and strips of bacon may be placed on top and browned in the oven. In this case, the bacon is not added to the steak.
Mom's note: Drain beans and mushrooms before adding.
