1/2 cup sugar 3 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon salt 6 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (about 4 large apples)
Crumb topping:
3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup cold butter
Final topping (optional)
1/4 cup caramel ice cream topping or your own caramel sauce 1/2 cup chopped pecans
**You can also make this without the pie crust in a 9x9 baking pan
Instructions
Bake single crust pie shell. Set aside.
In a large bowl, stir the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Add the apple slices and gently mix until they are well coated. Place mixture in baked pie crust.
Topping:
Mix together brown sugar, flour, and oats. Cut in the butter with fork or pastry blender, until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle crumb mixture over apples in pie and press down slightly.
Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes with foil covering the edges to prevent excess browning.
Remove foil and bake 25 to 30 minutes more, or until top is golden brown.
Optional:
Drizzle with caramel topping and sprinkle with pecans.
